The Korea 1991 Christmas and New Year/TB Seals

Seals

In 1991 the Korean National Tuberculosis Association (KNTA) seal program released two small sheets in a souvenir sheet format with ten different images on each of the two sheets for a total of 20 different seals. One of the sheets of seals depict Korean Harvest time and the other sheet shows Koreans scenes, including playing Yutnori, a traditional board game in Korea.

The 2022 Korea Postage Stamp Catalogue (KPSC) gives the catalogue numbers for the 1991 seals as TCS 268-277 and TCS 278-287, respectively, for the two small sheets. The KPSC values each small sheet at 8,000 won (US$6.00).

Fig 2. Above is shown another type of a Korea 1991 Christmas/TB sheet that contains ten seals depicting scenes from a Korean Harvest, KSPC TSC 268-277. There are red color lines on the upper lefthand margin and a light blue “i” stripe on the bottom lefthand margin.

In 1991, the production by the KNTA of the Christmas/TB seals increased significantly over the previous year to the amount of 29,522,000 seals. The author does not know the number of the 1990 seals that was sold. The price of each seal remained the same as the previous year, 120 won. With the increased amount of seals printed in 1991, it most likely that this was a new record for funds raised by the sales of Christmas/TB seals for the KNTA’s fight against TB.

The author has seen two types of the sheet TCS 268-277 and only one type of sheet TCS 278-287. Both sheets of TCS 268-277 shown in this article have red color lines in the upper left hand margin, but one has what appears to be “i” in light blue stripe in the bottom left margin. Most likely there are other types of the 1991 sheets.

The author does have a 1991 folder, also depicted in this article, which contained the seals in a pocket in which the seals are placed, but does not have an envelope, if one was used for the 1991 seals. There was also a promotional sheetlet which is shown in this article. The number of the folders printed remained the same from the previous year at 15,000.
