The Independence Hall of Korea, nestled in Cheonan, South Korea, stands as a beacon of historical significance. Since its inauguration on August 15, 1987, this sprawling museum has captivated visitors with its rich tapestry of Korean independence movements.
A Journey Through Time and Struggle, the many exhibition halls:
- The Hall of National Heritage: Step back in time to prehistoric eras and the illustrious Joseon Dynasty. Artifacts chronicle Korea’s heritage, including the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty and a vivid recreation of the legendary turtle ship.
- From 1860s to 1940s: The second exhibition hall houses treasures from a pivotal period. Among them, the first privately owned Korean newspaper, Tongnip Sinmun, and the Japan–Korea Treaty of 1905 echo the nation’s resilience during Japanese colonial rule.
- 1919 March 1st Movement: The third exhibit commemorates the spirited 1919 March 1st Movement. A copy of the Korean Declaration of Independence takes center stage, evoking the fervor of those who dared to defy oppression.
- Impact of Independence: The fourth hall traces the history as it unfolds through narratives of courage and sacrifice.
- Patriotic Struggle: The fifth exhibition, aptly named “Patriotic Struggle for National Independence,” showcases anti-Japanese armed resistance both within and beyond Korea’s borders. A Taegeukgi, unfurled during the 1920 Battle of Fengwudong, symbolizes unwavering resolve.
- Establishing the Great Korea: The sixth hall celebrates the Korean Provisional Government—the first democratic body formed after the March 1st Movement. Their tireless efforts laid the groundwork for a free Korea.
